This is the view from my shower. For ten years, I have looked through this window at all times of the year, day and night. There have been many times when the shadow cast from the moving sun creates a play between my building's air shaft and the two buildings behind it that make me think, "I have to paint this one day." I've painted this view from my living room, but never from the shower. So this time, after I turned off the water, I jumped out, ran to my table to fetch my paints and then came back barefoot to stand in the tub and quickly capture the shapes of light and shadow. I have to constantly remind myself to not focus on the details in a study such is this one. "What is the most compelling thing here?" I ask myself before I even start drawing onto the white cotton paper. In this case, the most compelling thing is this feeling of bright sun on the facade of the two tall buildings that rise out of the frame and also hit a triangular sliver of the wall directly opposite me. That tiny triangle of light being the same as the light on the far buildings is the subtle beauty of the composition of light and shadow here. The solid geometric shapes created by the light and shadow of bright sun are clear and exact. So,"How do I capture that?" is my next internal question: What makes the sun feel like sun? Its that shadow on the wall immediately in front of me.

I painted this "quick and dirty" but fully captured what I was after. To me, a very successful study.
