Study of Velazquez - Needlewoman

It is debated whether Velazquez painted 'The Needlewoman' or not. I chose to copy this piece compelled by the beauty of the skin tones framed by their dark surroundings of dress and hair.  The original was painted ca.1650

I don't consider this copy very successful, I overworked the paint in an attempt to paint the darker surroundings; with too many layers to make them darker, instead of confidently mixing the paint thickly and dark enough in a single layer. 

The reverse is a failed attempt at a Sargent portrait. Very bad. I laughed out loud when I gave up and stopped painting.
