Study of Manet's Irises - with pencil

This watercolor study is a copy of a watercolor painting by Edourd Manet done in 1880. I had been painting purple Irises from life in Denver (late May) and then saw this piece by Manet and was intrigued to copy it in an attempt to emulate the looseness of the flowers painted so delicately. I love Manet's composition, how the flowers are even cut off by the page at the top. I plan to use that aspect of this study in future work I do, painting flowers from life. 

This study was my first of two attempts of this subject. In this first attempt, I used pencil to lay in the flowers before painting.
