Of the three decorated vases in this sale, this is the best one. It was placed in a spot of the kiln that was not as hot as the others, leaving the blue decoration in tact (not drippy). The base and the glaze came out perfectly, with no dripping. This is something that's not easy to control in these firings, so when I inspect all the pieces at the end, I 'grade' them based on these minute observations.

I make these high-fired porcelain pieces once a year in the fall, with Guy Wolff. I first threw the vase on the wheel and then painted the design using cobalt (blue). When bisqued, Guy dips the piece into celadon glaze and then fires it at cone 10 in his propane-fuelled outdoor kiln. The weather conditions, the fluctuations in temperature, the amount of oxygen in the kiln and the location of the piece within the kiln (the height of the shelf it's placed on) all play a part in how the glaze and decoration appears in the end.
