Summer Sky Study

One evening while watching a movie with Guy and the family in CT, there was an incredible sky visible through the window that kept pulling my eyes away from the TV. As the colors got richer, I made mental notes to attempt to paint this simple gradation, with the darkening trees in the foreground, later. I painted these studies in Rhode Island about a week after seeing this view, with the goal of capturing the overall feel of the light, not the details of the trees. This is often where I slip, trying to make the painting 'look real', an amateur mistake. The goal of these very quick, loose studies was just to capture the gradation of the pink to blue to gold and then have it all feel like light by placing the contrast of the foliage in front of it. I was really happy with how this turned out.
