This vase was in a very hot place in the kiln, causing the cobalt to melt within the glaze and producing a high gloss drip effect. The drippy glaze caused a small are to stick to the kiln shelf, so a bit of the base has been sanded down removing the cracked shard of glaze *noted in photos.
I make these high-fired porcelain pieces once a year in the fall, with Guy Wolff. I first threw the vase on the wheel and then painted the design using cobalt (blue). When bisqued, Guy dips the piece into celadon glaze and then fires it at cone 10 in his propane-fuelled outdoor kiln. The weather conditions, the fluctuations in temperature, the amount of oxygen in the kiln and the location of the piece within the kiln (the height of the shelf it's placed on) all play a part in how the glaze and decoration appears in the end.
